Things to Do in Puerto Plata

The best kept secret in the Caribbean

Located in the northern part of the country, Puerto Plata is one of the most sought after tourist destinations by national and international tourists. It not only has paradisiacal beaches that take your breath away, but also mountains with extraordinary flora and fauna. The offer of tourism, adventure and nature is immense and very diverse.

But in addition, Puerto Plata has an enormous historical wealth. It was the place chosen by Christopher Columbus to build the first church on his arrival in America. It is equally interesting to visit the Castle of  San Felipe de El Morro. A fortification with more than 220 years of history.

Visitors can find many tourist attractions, such as the only cable car in the entire Caribbean. By cable car you can visit the Isabel de Torres Hill and once there take the opportunity to visit its botanical garden and enjoy one of the most impressive views of the Atlantic Sea from its viewpoint. In Puerto Plata there are high-quality cocoa and coffee crops, as well as the most expensive amber in the world. In the center of the city you can visit the Amber Museum. Nature and adventure lovers will also find in Puerto Plata options for hiking, biking and water sports on the beautiful beaches of Sosúa and Cabarete

Paseo Doña Blanca

Paseo de Doña Blanca or El Pasaje de Doña Blanca is a small alley in the center of Puerto Plata painted entirely in pink. This beautiful alley is a tribute to the founder of the first hotel in the city of Puerto Plata, the Europa hotel.

Its history dates back to 1898 when Isidoro Rainieri and Bianca Franceschini, natives of Italy, arrived in Puerto Plata and realizing that a hotel was needed to serve travelers, they decided to found the Hospedaje del Comercio, which they later changed the name to Hotel Europe.

UMBRELLA STREET

It is located a few meters from the Plaza Independencia, you can enjoy the Choco Museum, smoke a cigar beside other recreational activities . A colorful, artisanal, musical and culinary experience, delving into the roots and customs of Puerto Plata, since it consists of a mixture of cultures and everything we can see is the result of that.

Playa Cambiaso en Luperón:

CAMBIASO BEACH IN LUPERON

Reaching the spectacular white sands of Playa Cambiaso is worth it. About an hour and a half northwest of Puerto Plata, between Maimón and Luperón, this wide stretch is lined with coconut palms with donkeys feeding in the background and a couple of restaurants serving fresh fish. Families congregate here on the weekends, but during the week you can have the beach all to yourself. The beach is hard to find and takes you over bumpy dirt roads, you will need a good driver and an ATV.

OLD OSCAR BEACH

This is a natural paradise, with its white sand, crystalline waters and natural vegetation that protects from the sun. Very little visited, so that lovers of relaxation and tranquility will have a special place for those "getaways" with someone special.

SOSUA BAY

You can enjoy transparent kayak excursions, where you can contemplate all the beauty of our coast and marinediversity.

ALICIA BEACH IN SOSUA

A secluded place, but close to the center of Sosúa. This beach was formed in the last decade by the movement of sand towards that place, which is why it is also called "miraculous beach". It is a place to go for a lrecreational swim and enjoy the impressive sunsets.
